Lawyer, Business Advisory

Contact

James is a lawyer at MT+Co. who left Winnipeg winters for the West Coast, and left big law for a more conscious, value-driven environment. He just kept showing up at MT+Co. events until we hired him. He’s also a part-time musician and full-time hacker (golf, not computers).

Why MT+Co.?

“MT+Co. views legal practice through the lens of value, not profit. That core belief is deeply steeped in the firm’s DNA, and makes for progressive and meaningful relationships between our firm, our clients, and our team-members. MT+Co. is proof that values and success are not only compatible, but complimentary.”

Expertise

James began his legal career at a national law firm where he gained experience in securities, corporate finance, mergers and acquisitions, complex commercial transactions, corporate governance and regulatory matters in the infrastructure development, real estate, aerospace, financial technology, manufacturing, distribution and retail, and professional services sectors.

As a member of MT+Co.’s Business Law Group, James’ practice includes:

  • Emerging Industries: Large-scale regulatory compliance reviews and advising, general business advisory to businesses in new and emerging industries
  • Start-up and Growth Companies: Shareholders’ agreements, debt and equity financing, corporate governance, intellectual property and technology services agreements, and general corporate and commercial matters
  • Indigenous Law: Project financing, restructuring, governance, general corporate and commercial matters
  • Societies and Charities: Applications for charitable status, society incorporation, structuring, bylaw and policy development
  • Corporate and Commercial: Mid-market mergers and acquisitions, negotiating, reviewing and drafting corporate and commercial agreements, leasing matters, and general business advisory

Background

  • BA in Psychology and Management from the University of Manitoba
  • JD from the Allard School of Law
    • Allard Law Students’ Society representative
    • Member of the Wilson Moot team
    • 2015 Orientation Coordinator

Worth Noting

James has volunteered with and organized a number of charitable events for a number of non-profit organizations and sustainability companies. He is a retired professional singer-songwriter who spent a number of years on the road, in the studio, and on the radio, and still plays around Vancouver and his hometown Winnipeg from time to time. Away from the office, James is probably learning early 2000s R&B covers on guitar, hacking away on city golf-courses, playing video-games, or volunteering with an organization that inspires him.
